Turkey faces up to its new importance
TO the West, the Gulf crisis has enhanced Turgut Ozal's reputation as a statesman of international standing. His handling of it has converged with the US vision of Turkey as a stable state, secular yet with an Islamic population, both a firm friend of the West and an example to other countries in a volatile region.
At home, Ozal's success so far has earned him a grudging popular respect.
