Once a staging area for the great cattle drives of yesteryear, Bandera is still a genuine Western town, a friendly place that touts itself as the "Cowboy Capital of the World." When ranching fell on hard times in the 1930s, an enterprising rancher decided to take in "dudes" to help him through the Depression. The tourism industry was on its way.
In this part of Texas Hill Country, about 40 miles northwest of San Antonio, 13 dude ranches invite city slickers to dig into chuckwagon meals and ride horses through the rocky hills covered with live oak and cedar trees. The terrain is home to whitetail deer, armadillos, and jackrabbits.
