Uganda is to acquire patrol boats to protect its Lake Victoria territorial waters, aimed at checking the intrusion of unlicensed fishermen.
The Ugandan department of fisheries says that incursions continue daily despite promises from Kenya to stop them. Now the government says it will step up deterrence measures.
"We are going to buy four patrol boats and increase our presence on the lake's waters so that everybody who fishes does so legally," Commissioner of Fisheries, Dick Nyeko, was recently quoted in the media as saying.
