Sep. 17--PROVIDENCE, R.I.--Two weeks on the job, and already Jerry Schaufeld's brain is spinning faster than a hamster on a wheel.

Schaufeld, named the new director of the Samuel Slater Technology Fund on Sept. 3, began formulating a growth strategy for the $2.5 million program even before his job officially started.

So during his first week, the 62-year-old former entrepreneur wasted no time meeting with state legislators, business leaders and the directors of the Slater Fund's four centers. His goals: raise the profile of the program, erase any controversy ...
