LA JOLLA - Developers strain to create new communities that feel old, ones infused with character, dignity, a sense of deep roots.
For the model, they look to La Jolla.

This coastal community just north of San Diego developed its personality in the early 1900s when transplanted, wealthy Easterners settled here and established a seaside village with a Mediterranean ambience. Even now, the place exudes old money. Though within the northern limits of San Diego, it feels as if it should be incorporated - and gated.
