The West Nile virus, which has been advancing steadily westward across the country, is expected to reach Washington by next year, and the state is planning ways to reduce potential harm to people and animals.
"When West Nile virus arrives to our county, it will not be cause for alarm or panic," King County Executive Ron Sims said yesterday, calling for public help in reducing mosquito habitat and reporting dead crows. Mosquitoes spread the virus, and birds can harbor it.
