IS FAMINE stalking the Soviet Union? Mrs Valentina Gudilina has been reported as telling the Soviet parliament, "I've been in my constituency, and there will be famine there soon, comrades ... real famine." Mrs Gudilina's constituency is Solnechnogorsk just outside Moscow, traditionally one of the most richly-supplied regions of the country. If famine might strike there, how could poorer areas in Central Asia and Siberia possibly avoid it?
Mrs Gudilina's words prompted a rush to send food parcels from around the world. The first emergency food aid sent to the country since the second world war arrived in Leningrad from Hamburg on November 26th. Most of this aid ...
