Verdi's Messa da Requiem
Verdi's Messa da Requiem has been called, in a kind of acerbic put down, his greatest opera. In some Protestant countries, there was once hearty disapproval of the Requiem, as if the greatest drama in man's life was diminished by so rich a statement. But Verdi, a devout Catholic, was giving expression in his own voice to his beliefs and to the liturgy in the terms of his musical genius.
