The semiconductor industry touts itself as proactively pursuing, predicting and preventing environmental problems, and is mainly motivated by competition, not just being a good corporate citizen.
It is a relatively clean industry that faces three primary environmental challenges - water usage, air emissions and the introduction of new chemicals, said Farhang Shadman, director of the Engineering Center for Environmentally Benign Semiconductor Manufacturing at the University of Arizona in Tucson. The university operates the center in cooperation with the National Science Foundation and Semiconductor Research Corp.
