Beginning this week, Mexico High School senior Shelly Dann will set her alarm for 4:30 a.m. three days a week. She'll arrive at school by 5:30 a.m., and most nights won't get home until after 7 p.m.
Early mornings will be filled with Junior ROTC drill-team instruction; in late afternoons it's varsity swim practice for Dann, the team captain. In between, the honor student will attend regular classes.
That level of commitment isn't unusual for Dann, 17, said Dan Aguilar, a retired Marine Corps major and senior instructor for Mexico High's Junior ROTC program.
