A WEAK MARKET for office paper has depressed demand for precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), but manufacturers of the specialty mineral continue to add capacity in expectation of recovery.
Demand from PCC's primary consumer, uncoated woodfree or freesheet paper (office paper), has fallen roughly 3 percent, year-to-date. And shipments for this paper grade from North American paper mills have been down between 3 to 4 percent, year-on-year. Overall demand for PCC in North America has consequently been flat to down 3 percent this year.
