THE TASK OF sorting a few boxes of genealogical papers which had been stored in the attic for several years, made me realize how fragile our paper treasures are. Paper clips and staples had rusted, leaving marks. Rubber bands had turned into sticky residue on some documents. Not surprisingly, old carbon copies and computer printouts from ancient dot-matrix printers (remember those?) were so faded they were impossible to read.
All this damage took place in a mild climate and an insulated attic. In a harsher climate, and had the material been exposed to the sun, even more damage would have occurred. Genealogists collect ...
