Sep. 21--Animal-care workers have removed 51 puppies from a Citrus Heights pet shop, including many of the smaller "toy breeds" most cherished by pet lovers and most vulnerable to neglect and disease.
Animal control and SPCA officers were called to the shop after repeated complaints that the Puppy Warehouse store at Sunrise Boulevard and Woodmore Oaks Drive was selling sick puppies. A Channel 3 (KCRA) television news reporter also called both agencies when she said she saw several dogs that appeared to be mauling another dog in the window of the shop.
