WALNUT CREEK, Calif. _ The California Federation of Teachers will join a short list of state organizations who want to give children safe activity and enrichment outside of the school day, but say the After School Education and Safety Act ballot initiative won't accomplish that goal.
"We support the intent of the initiative, but Prop. 49 is fatally flawed. Prop. 49 provides not one penny of new funding for much needed after school or other programs," federation President Mary Bergan said.
Proposition 49 proposes to make after-school programs available to all elementary and middle schools by guaranteeing the state's yearly expenditure on the programs.
