Unorthodox architect finds his work brings controversy
Armistead Smith isn't just an architect - he's a nonconformist and an adventurer. Who else would choose to spend a summer in San Diego without a car?
As part of an experiment in 1988, Smith never ventured any farther than he could walk from his Torrey Pines home. His "city" consisted of a Circle K, a Roberto's, and a few other restaurants.
"All my needs were taken care of, and it was an alternative to San Diego's ridiculous (car-dependent) makeup," Smith recalled.
