Capt. Mark Wahlstrom had been in the Navy for nearly 25 years as of Sept. 11, 2001. He'd taken command of a new ship, the cruiser Cape St. George, just a month before the terrorist attacks.
"Since the war on terrorism began, everything, of course, is taken much more seriously," said Wahlstrom, 47, a resident of Pitchkettle Point in Suffolk.
"Probably the most noticeable difference on ship is the increase of watch-standers, crew members directly involved with protection of the ship. There's a lot more firearms training and focus on basic awareness and combat readiness."
