WILMINGTON -- Steve Shields will try hard in the coming months to endear himself to Bruins fans, but he certainly took a nice first step toward winning over local fandom before he ever stepped on the ice for his first practice with his new team yesterday at Ristuccia Arena.
Searching for a design for his new goalie's helmet after being acquired from Anaheim in June, Shields came up with a beauty: A recreation of ex-Bruin goalie Gerry Cheevers' famous mask, which included dozens of faux stitch-marks drawn on by late equipment man John "Frosty" Forristall - a nice way of paying homage to the last Boston goalie to win a Stanley Cup.
