For the second time, Bishop Sean P. O'Malley of Fall River, Mass., has been chosen by the pope to head a diocese struggling with a sexual abuse scandal.
O'Malley is to succeed Bishop Anthony J. O'Connell of Palm Beach, Fla., who resigned in March following charges he had sexually abused a minor.
In 1992, O'Malley was appointed head of the Fall River, Mass., diocese, which was then facing lawsuits claiming that John Porter, a priest who has since been defrocked, committed sexual abuse of dozens of minors.
