A division is opening up in the European chemical industry about how companies should aim to be seen by stakeholders and the public as being responsible operators. Some companies, mainly multinationals, and a number of national chemical industry associations want to move beyond the Responsible Care program into areas embracing social and economic as well as environmental principles. But others, especially small and medium-sized producers (SMEs), want to concentrate on fulfilling Responsible Care targets rather than stretching their resources further by trying to achieve goals unrelated to the environment.
