The 37-year old Richard Johnston began studying and performing country blues a decade ago while living in Japan. During the next four years he was a club headliner in some of the nation's largest cities.
Serendipitously, a music critic for Memphis' Commercial Appeal daily saw the Houston native in Nagoya and encouraged him to attempt a career in the states. His percussive, primitive guitar and gritty vocals soon became a fixture on the thriving Beale Street blues scene.
With his recent introduction to the raw Fat Possum sound, pioneered by the late Junior Kimbrough and Rainey Burnette, Johnston has turned things up a notch. His sound is an amalgam of ...
