Sep. 25--It's a dangerous job, but someone volunteers to do it.
That someone is Barbara MacDonald, who serves on the fire brigade at the Shell Bakersfield Refinery.
"You work out here and you become a family," MacDonald said. "You want to protect your family."
You also want to protect the community, added Kirk Shelton, the fire brigade chief.
Shelton heads up the 35-member fire brigade.
It used to be mandatory for personnel in certain positions to serve on the fire brigade.
