Most guidebooks describe Locarno as a somewhat quiet but picturesque lakeside town in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. But during the town's film festival the tranquil atmosphere all but disappears as eager filmgoers turn Locarno into one massive Multiplex.
For ten days in August the Locarno International Film Festival transforms the town's Piazza Grande into one of the largest open-air cinemas in Europe. There's a capacity audience of 7,000 in the piazza, and the screen itself measures 26 by 14 meters, making it one of the biggest open-air screens in the world.
