It is not unusual for the various separation media--such as activated carbons, cartridge filters, ion exchange resins and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes--to be used inline for product filtration, purification and polishing. As the performance of these materials is improved, however, they are more likely to compete with, rather than complement, each other.
For example, final polishing of ultrapure water, a step that had been reserved for RO membranes, can also be done using ion exchange resins (CE, December 2001, pp. 79-82).
