Nick Crismale, skipper of the Proud Mary, a 45-foot Dixon that fishes out of Branford Conn., hauls a trap over the rail and passes it to deckhand Tom Walsh. Walsh opens the trap up, pulls out a few spider crabs, throws them over the side and passes the trap off to Cesar Valdez, the sternman who baits the trap and carries it aft. The process continues until 10 traps sit on the back deck.
Aside from the spider crabs and a random scup, the pots are mostly empty. After the first trawl, only two lobsters weighing just over a pound apiece scuttle around on the sorting table, waiting to be banded and then dumped into the live tank. When asked about how much bait goes ...
