EMILY CARR'S NAME is not a household word here in Washington state. But it may become one after folks view the terrific exhibit on this exceptional woman at Victoria's Royal British Columbia Museum.

Carr was a woman ahead of her time. She was born in 1871 in a house a few blocks from where the museum now stands and died in 1945 across the street from that house. In the intervening 74 years, she led a remarkable life and left a rich legacy.
