State wildlife officials have given up trying to find a black bear that attacked a University of Minnesota wildlife researcher Sept. 15 in central Minnesota, and they have reopened the public hunting area where the attack occurred.
"It looks like the bear moved out of the area shortly after the attack," said Ed Boggess, assistant director of the state Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Division. "Although expanding the search area might increase the chance of getting a bear, it would be very difficult to determine if we had the bear responsible for the attack."
