Which movie character strikes the most fear in the hearts of moviegoers, while at the same time fascinating them? Try Hannibal Lecter on for size.
"There is an Internet poll where Hannibal was the most popular villain in movie history," said screenwriter Ted Tally, who won an Oscar for his "The Silence of the Lambs" screenplay. "He beat the shark (from `Jaws'), Dracula, Darth Vader. People like him because of his wit."
Anthony Hopkins, who sinks his teeth into the role of Hannibal Lecter again when "Red Dragon" opens on Friday, can't quite pinpoint what makes the character so appealing.
