Beyond Bakelite
NEW YORK -- Plastic is coming on strong for jewelry and hair accessories. Especially popular is Bakelite, either the genuine article or modern imitations.
Eve Reid is using a resin called Catalin for spring-summer barrettes and jewelry. "I've been collecting Bakelite forever, and it took a lot of research to find an alternative I was satisfied with," she said. Reid went to the original manufacturer of Bakelite -- and found Catalin, which she called "the Mercedes-Benz of resins."
Reid is particularly excited about Catalin because she can manipulate and carve it. "I was looking for a hard material that would give me the same range ...
