OPERA weekends should be adventures. Indeed, they often have a way of turning themselves into escapades, as if determined to involve you in the melodrama.
So it was that we found ourselves sitting in an immobile plane at Heathrow, cursing the air traffic control computer and its sickness, knowing that at that very moment the curtain was going up on Tosca in Berlin and the crashing chords would be going Pam! Pam! Pam!
But the adventurous spirit overcame rage. Could we make it for the last act? We did.
We thought about the opera as we hoped for that elusive tailwind.
