Over the years, exchangeability of numerical control (NC) programs has been a favorite topic of mine. It was one of the first issues I encountered ten years ago while still new to machine tools and NC. That's when I first heard about moving the postprocessor to the control unit and standardizing NC program input to achieve exchangeability. Delving into this concept forced me to grapple with some of the most challenging and problematical aspects of NC technology.
Since then, I have continued to follow the progress of efforts to create an NC exchangeability standard, now referred to as BCL (Binary Cutter Location). This has been an enlightening study. It revealed ...
