Cambridge University Press has seen fit to present this book on its dust jacket as "the first fully documented history of Ireland and the Irish between the fourth and ninth centuries AD...." Publishers' claims are apt to be somewhat grandiose, but this one has some merit. Most historical surveys of Early Christian Ireland take as their scope the period from the fifth to the twelfth centuries, but in so doing tend to leap over some of the impenetrable thickets presented by the sources in discussions of the earliest centuries in that ...
