These may not have been the worst of times for Amtrak, but they haven't been the best either, not for the railroad and not for its customers. Another high-profile accident and serious technical problems with the Acela Express high speed trainsets catapulted Amtrak back in the news scarcely before the ink was dry on a stream of stories about the railroad's economic viability.
