A new firm will be operating and maintaining the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's commuter rail system after next July because Amtrak has decided not to bid on the contract.
In a letter to MBTA General Manager Michael H. Mulhern, Amtrak President and CEO David L. Gunn stated that strict new requirements demanded by the META could end up costing the company more money than it earned. In effect, it would be subsidizing the service, a violation of federal law. "I am sure you will understand our predicament," Gunn wrote.
