Whether sheared for a formal look or allowed to grow naturally, a hedge is one of the hardest-working elements in the landscape. A low one can frame a flower bed or mark a corridor to your front door, while a tall one can create a privacy screen or form "green walls" that divide your garden into separate rooms.
October is an excellent month to plant a hedge. Deciduous shrubs and trees and many evergreens are going into dormancy, and cool, often moist weather is ahead. Plants have the winter and spring to get established before summer heat hits.
