What is a line supervisor's job?
Were that question asked of me, when I first was promoted to supervisor, I'd have looked with surprise at the person asking it. I would have thought, what an odd question, everyone knows the answer to that, a supervisor tells people what to do. That responsibility seemed simple to me in contrast to my work as a member of a production team. As I looked forward to my first day on the job as a supervisor, I visualized my wearing a jacket and tie to the job and spending my time walking around the section insuring that the line was functioning properly and every now and then having meetings, perhaps even lunch with the department ...
