Heimaey: Westman Islands
Twenty minutes after taking off from Reykjavik airport in our eight passenger Cessna, we circled the world's newest volcanic island, Surtsey. Within ten minutes, we started our approach to the landing strip of black granular lava on the Island of Heimaey, the only inhabited island in the Westman Archipelago.
Towering over the town of Heimaey we could see the twin volcanoes of Helgafell and Eldfell. Our islander guide, Pali, met us at the airport, the fourth busiest in Iceland and we started our photographic exploration of the island.
