Oct. 1--The U.S. and Illinois Departments of Labor on Monday sued the owners of 14 Chicago-area Chinese buffet-style restaurants, seeking a total of $1.5 million in back wages for 150 employees who officials say worked excessive hours but were denied the minimum wage and overtime pay.
The employees--mostly Asians and Hispanics working as cooks or busboys at restaurants with "China Buffet" in the title--spoke little, if any, English, worked as many as 66 hours a week and were paid in cash, officials said.
