ABSTRACT
Reductions in enzyme-mediated sapwood discolorations have been observed in studies where hardwood lumber was subjected to mechanical stresses (the TASK[TM] Process) prior to drying. The objective of this research was to determine whether differences in strength and/or finishing characteristics exist in non-processed and TASK-processed hardwood lumber. Static-bending strength tests and finishing tests indicated that there are no significant differences in these characteristics between non-processed and TASK-processed southern red oak and ash, whereas losses in strength did occur in TASK-processed yellow-poplar using the same machine settings as with ash ...
