As concerns rise over the environmental problems associated with the disposal of mercury in batteries, manufacturers have been striving to eliminate mercury content n their products. Dieter Spahrbier reviews developments, and describes his own company's R&D efforts, especially in the area of low-mercury 'alkaline/manganese' batteries. Pilot plant batteries are now under evaluation, and initial results look promising. However, further work will be required to realise mass production goals.
