Calling a restaurant the Grand Lux Cafe invites accusations of hyperbole, but the Cheesecake Factory's tonier Magnificent Mile sister lives up to its name.
For starters, the design definitely is on a grand scale, and the decor is decidedly lux. Gustav Klimt-style curlicues decorating the walls and even the elevator door of the street-level entrance area provide a tiny taste of what's to come on the second floor, where a stairwell leads to the spacious main dining room: a medieval-meets-Art Nouveau/Deco extravaganza of mosaics, stenciling, warm wood paneling, soaring coved ceilings, inlaid marble floors and plush fabrics.
