In order to effectively manage large ungulates, reliable information on spatial distribution of these animals needs to be identified. A study was initiated on U.S. Department of the Interior-Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land southwest of Chama, New Mexico in Rio Arriba county. The study area was selected because the grazing permit had expired two years hence and the BLM had not renewed the permit, thus, closed the land and allowed for free movement of elk (Cervus elaphus c. nelsoni L.) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus Rafinesque).
Fecal pellet group counts were used to determine elk and mule deer use of three different cover types: ponderosa pine ...
