Oct. 3--Akron Beacon Journal Managing Editor Thomas J. Fladung is leaving at the end of the month to take over the same role at the Detroit Free Press.
Fladung, 42, has been managing editor at the Beacon Journal since July 2000.
"It was a hard decision," Fladung said Tuesday. "I really appreciate the Beacon Journal, and how the community connects with the Beacon Journal." He cited the example of the paper joining the community to raise money for a firetruck for New York City after Sept. 11.
