Mediterranean uniqueness.
The Mediterranean Sea is dominated by small boats fishing near the coastline for one or two days maximum, which makes it so special. It is home to nearly half the Community fishing fleet in terms of boat numbers but only makes up 22% of the EU's tonnage. Approximately 80% of the boats fishing in the Sea are under 12 metres in length so it is basically an artisanal fishing industry. Although only 12% of the EU's fish catches are landed in the Mediterranean countries, there are rich pickings because nearly all the fish is sold for human consumption.
