On 18th September 2002, the Vice President of Sonangol E.P, Angola's national oil company, signed a mandate with Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein to advise on the financing of a major new international oil refinery which will be developed on a joint venture basis in Angola.
The proposed SONAREF refinery will be located on the coast approximately 20 km north of Lobito. The city of Lobito is about 500 km south of the capital city of Luanda and has a population of approximately 750,000 people.
