Competition fierce in antacids arena
CDR Roundup - The $880 million antacids category, which is slow-growing and highly competitive, continues to do well for the chain drug industry. In fact, roughly 30% of antacids sales go to chain drug stores.
According to Nielsen Marketing Research's latest figures, the chain drug segment of the market grew 2% in 1989 to $313 million. On a combined basis, food stores are the dominant trade class. Conventional supermarkets control 27% of volume, and combos garner 15%.
Since antacids constitute a mature category, growth often comes to one manufacturer at the expense of others. Competition is fierce, with a ...
