John Robert Dunn, FCIC was born in Andover, Hants, England on May 12, 1930. He attended the Andover Grammar School, and later attended King's College at the University of London, England where he received his bachelor of science degree (special) with first-class honours in chemistry in 1951. Dunn received his PhD in physical chemistry from Balliol College at the University of Oxford, England in 1953. He left England for Canada aboard the S.S. Scythia of the Cunard Line that same year.
