A major building programme to increase ethylene capacity in the Middle East by 2010 is being planned to meet higher long-term demand for derivatives in Asia. However, delays are creating uncertainty over the future of some of the projects.
Around 15m tonne/year of ethylene capacity and a similar amount of ethylene derivatives are planned to come onstream in the Middle East by 2010. It is a massive organisational, financial and logistical challenge to Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi where virtually all the extra plants are scheduled to be constructed.
