THE MORE the fog lifts over Eastern Europe, the clearer the view becomes of the forest of question marks there. Our friends in the Western Hemisphere tend to believe that we have seen the last act of the drama that began in September 1939. In this view Adam Smith has finally defeated Karl Marx; by adopting a package of liberal multi-party democracy, freedom of speech, welfarism, and free trade, Eastern Europe will soon find itself on easy street.
