COAST FIRMS STRUGGLE FOR IDENTITY
LOS ANGELES - West Coast design isn't just for the West Coast, according to retailers and designers in California.
Leading West Coast specialty retailers recognize the best of the West but are reluctant to commit themselves to exclusively West Coast designer merchandise. Meanwhile, West Coast designers say they don't want to be associated with just one geographic area.
"We don't carry very many West Coast designers," said Gail Coulter, buyer of Mario's, two contemporary men's and women's specialty stores in Seattle and Portland. "Our customer is older, more mature. They don't want trendy styles, they want quality. ...
