RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil _ Although presidential candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva fell short of a first-round election victory as final ballots were counted Monday, Brazil's vote was decisive in at least one way _ it revealed a growing shift to the left for Latin America's largest democracy.
Between da Silva and two other leading candidates who also represent leftist parties, the left garnered about 76 percent of the vote in Sunday's election.
